history
Both Espès and Undurein belonged in historical times to the old Basque province of Soule . In September or October 1661, an armed military conflict took place near Undurein between the rebellious local population ( Matalas rebellion ) and French troops loyal to the king, which the rebels under the battle cry Herria! Herria! ("The people! The people!") Could decide for themselves.
Both neighboring communities were independent for centuries, but merged into one community in 1842.
Attractions
- The single-nave church of Espès probably dates from the 16th century and has a bell gable with only one point, which is rather rare in the Soule region ; the actual bell chamber is made of wood. In front of the entrance there is a porch that was used as a meeting place before processions. In the cemetery there are several old disc- shaped grave steles ( Hilarri ); the three oldest date from the 17th century and were placed in the entrance area of the church - they have crosses in the middle, which are framed by jagged lines or ray patterns ( sun symbols ?); the middle one also shows three leaf rosettes. A name is nowhere to be found, because Basque was not a written language for a long time.
- A striking feature of the church of Undurein , which also has only one nave, is a clocher trinitaire . On the other hand, there was no portal porch.
