Andrein lies in the catchment area of the Adour River on the right bank of the Gave d'Oloron and is crossed by its tributaries, the Héuré , Maiourau , which rises in the local area, and Arriou Tort and its tributary Lourou .

history

A burial mound discovered in the 19th century indicates settlement as early as the Gallo-Roman period . The grave is surrounded by fragments of charcoal. Two vases were also found, one made of black clay, the other one made of red clay.

The settlement is laid out on a section of the Camino de Santiago . The geographical location high on a rock above the valley of the Gave d'Oloron also encouraged the building of castles and palaces. The settlement was first mentioned under the name Andrenh in 1385 on the occasion of a census. In later years a lay monastery was built on the orders of the liege lord of Bétouzet , who then raised the tithe .

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . Framed by the cemetery, it is built directly on the edge of the cliff high above the Day of Gaves in the 12th century. The bell tower is built on the west side of the nave , which also served to defend the settlement when it was built. The restored interior shows a paneled ceiling and church furnishings in good condition.
  • The Château de Baillenx was first mentioned in 1544. It is the oldest castle in Andrein, originally built as a lay monastery near the local church. This rather modest building for a mansion is nevertheless provided with a wide moat, barns, horse stables and a park. You can also discover a garden with a dovecote and the manager's courtyard. After the castle was owned by the Caumia-Baillenx family at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century, it was then extensively redesigned by Claire-Madeleine de Gassion. She had attics and numerous chimneys installed, the roof re-covered and provided with three dormers. Inside, a Louis-treize- style staircase with thick balusters leads to the top of the two floors.
  • The Château de Bachoué is the most important of the three castles in the municipality, but also the youngest, as it was rebuilt after a fire. The census of 1385 already mentions a Bachoué house in Andrein. Their owners were raised to the nobility in 1578 in return for the services of the French King Henry IV . Bachoué Castle was built in the 17th century, but has been redesigned many times since then. On the U-shaped floor plan, the central residential wing is symmetrically flanked by two pavilions . The top floor is developed as an attic . A medieval-style tower with battlements and machicolations towers over the residential wing on the north facade.
  • The Château de Betouzet was built in the 12th century a little away from the town center. It was mentioned as early as 1385. In return for services to the French king, its owner was raised to the nobility by Henry IV in 1611 . They also got access to the Béarn council meeting. The manor was transformed into a lay monastery in the 17th century. In addition to the two residential wings, the palace now consists of outbuildings, stables, gardens with greenhouses and an Italian-style terrace. One side wing is in the Louis-Treize style with windows with ornate frames and protruding window sills , the south facade of the main wing after a further restoration in the 18th century in the Louis-quinze style .
