history

The village of Goes was built in the 10th century on the bank of a now diked watercourse. Markets were held as early as the 12th century. In 1405 Goes got jurisdiction, that is, the citizens' right to their own jurisdiction; In 1417 Jakoba von Bayern Goes granted the right to build a city fortification. Goes owed its economic boom in the Middle Ages to salt production, its port and shipping. In 1554 the town with its many wooden houses burned down and was soon rebuilt. In the Eighty Years' War Goes fell into the hands of the rebellious Dutch as early as 1577. Fortifications were built on it. From the 17th century it was again a market town for the surrounding farmers, which in the 19th century lost its importance. When the railway connection was established in 1868 and, above all, when an industrial site was opened in 1980, an economic boom set in.
