The artist's means of expression include paintings that he paints in oils and acrylics on canvas, as well as gouaches . On the whole, his motifs can be divided into two groups. On the one hand, it depicts people, often young people, in public space. On the other hand, it depicts wide, flat landscapes with a distant horizon. Frequent landscape motifs include large expanses of water, beaches, the heavily furrowed soil of fields and dunes. The emphatically painterly application of paint in the form of frayed brushstrokes or streaky color gradients corresponds to a sometimes unrealistic color scheme (e.g. green waves and black sky or black earth). Typical for the representation of people are pictures with individual people who are completely turned to themselves, often also recumbent. In other of Vermeule's paintings, people are grouped together in small groups. The diverse relationships between people are expressed through gestures , facial expressions , the direction of gaze, the posture and the distance between the portrayed. Such a group of two girls, who were painted in an everyday but also puzzling relationship to one another, can be seen in the painting "Iceland" from 2011. In this, as in other pictures, the characters, while not looking at each other, turn their attention to each other in a casually familiar way . A recurring detail is the occupation of those depicted with portable electronic devices such as smartphones or laptops .
