The posture is the position of the human body determined by the interaction of muscles , ligaments and bones .

The research and analysis of a healthy posture is the subject of orthopedics and ergonomics , practicing it is the task of physiotherapy and methods of gymnastics .

Development history

Posture was already being problematized in the 18th century and the first medical dissertations were written on the positive effects of riding on the back muscles and posture. Michael Argyle distinguishes three basic postures of the body in his social psychological texts: standing, sitting / squatting / kneeling and lying. These can be combined with a variety of arm and leg movements (cf. Argyle, 1979). Corresponding forms of locomotion have developed from this both in the history of the development of animals and in the life cycle of individual humans.

Body language

The posture and the spatial relationship between people can express, among other things, the intimacy, affection, status and power of two actors. Posture and spatial distance are directly related to each other and together express the intentions of the conversation partner - body movements are often unconscious movements.

medicine

In medicine, connections between unfavorable postures and disorders of the musculoskeletal system ( pelvic obliquity , back pain , neck pain, grinding of teeth , headache ) are increasingly recognized . Posture is negatively influenced by lack of movement, stress and the resulting muscle tension . Measurement methods for determining postural damage are known as posturography .

For example, during prolonged activity in a crouching position, paralysis of the common peroneal nerve is a medical complication that often occurs.
