The Rijksmuseum Twenthe is a museum for old and new art in the Dutch city of Enschede .

history

The founder and benefactor of the museum is the textile manufacturer Jan Bernard van Heek. Its 140 works, mainly paintings from the Middle Ages to the 19th century , form the basis of the museum, which was opened in 1930 and handed over to the state. In its beginnings it was both an art museum and a historical and cultural history museum. It housed the collection of the Oudheidkamer Twenthe . This part of the collection was later separated and moved to the “Twentse Welle” museum. Private donors have made a significant contribution to the growth of the portfolio to over 8,000 objects from the 13th century to the present:

  • In the 1960s the textile manufacturers JB Scholten and MG van Heel donated their large collections of paintings from the 17th and 19th centuries.
  • In the 1990s, JM van Kempen enriched the museum with hundreds of prints, drawings and books and the Martens-Mulder Foundation with silver from the 17th and 18th centuries .
  • The collector Karel Levisson donated hundreds of drawings and prints from the 19th and 20th centuries to the museum.
  • The collection of the VBVR depot has enriched the museum with over 1000 works of modern art since 1965.

building

The architects Karel Muller and Anton Beudt built the building on behalf of the Van Heek family. The complex resembles a monastery. The architects' intention was to build a closed complex in which art can be viewed in peace. The museum has been expanded several times in the original style.

Between 1994 and 1996 the building was rebuilt by Ben van Berkel : He built a new, modern show hall and the museum café. The buildings were equipped with air conditioning.

The museum garden in the inner courtyard was designed by the landscape architect Lodewijk Baljon.

The building was badly damaged by the explosion of the Enschede fireworks factory on May 13, 2000, but the collection was not. It remained closed for repairs until May 14, 2002. A splintered laminated safety glass window still reminds of the explosion today .
