The water currents have in the delta of the Westerschelde west of Vlissingen u. a. created two creeks which, because of their depth, serve as a navigation channel for seafaring .

The Wielingen runs in a westerly direction off the coast of Zeeuws Vlaanderen and West Flanders . In particular, it is used by large and very large container ships to travel to Antwerp in traffic with the Far East .

The Oostgat stretches very close to the southwest coast of Walcheren and is mainly used by small to medium-sized ships in traffic to Dutch and German ports on the North Sea and for traffic to offshore structures .
