economy
Breskens was founded as an agricultural community around 900 AD. In the 19th century there was only a primitive trading port, which consisted of a long pier, and even then the basin had to be dredged regularly. At that time, fishing was done for regional consumption and no nets were used. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that commercial, coordinated fishing for export was added as an economic sector, which reached its economic peak in the early 1950s. Shortly after the city was almost completely destroyed by bombing on September 11, 1944, some of its citizens therefore lived in material abundance from the herring. But a short time later, the fatal consequences for the fish population were felt. As a result, the profitability of the cutters quickly decreased. Due to the proximity to many beaches, tourism has also been an important source of income since then. A highlight of the year is the two-day fishing festival, which every year in mid-August attracts thousands of tourists and residents of Zeeland.
traffic
Car ferry operations were discontinued in March 2003 with the opening of the Westerschelden Tunnel. For pedestrians, cyclists and moped drivers there is still a regular ferry connection with two catamaran high-speed ferries from Veolia Transport Fast Ferries to Vlissingen .
