Canal through Zuid-Beveland
The canal through Zuid-Beveland ( Dutch Kanaal door Zuid-Beveland ) crosses the Dutch peninsula Zuid-Beveland and connects the Westerschelde with the Oosterschelde , and was created between 1850 and 1866 and has a length of around 10.80 kilometers. Further canals are located at the eastern end of the peninsula, the Scheldt-Rhine Canal , and at the southwestern end of the canal through Walcheren . Both waterways enable a ship connection from Antwerp to the Rhine . In the 19th century the canal was one of the busiest canals in Europe. It only lost its importance with the opening of the Scheldt-Rhine Canal, but is still important for the connection with Ghent ( Belgium ). At the end of the 1980s, after the Oosterschelde dyke was completed, the Wemeldinge lock was closed and the canal entrance relocated.
At the confluence with the Westerschelde near Hansweert there is a double lock with the dimensions 280 × 24 meters. The canal is classified as CEMT class VIb and can be used by pushed convoys with up to four barges . The water depth and thus also the bridge heights are influenced by the tide height in the Osterschelde, the water depth is 6.50 to 4.80 meters. Two road bridges and a railway bridge cross the canal. In addition to a fixed part, all bridges also have a bascule bridge . The clearance heights are (with average water level on the North Sea) 10.50 m under the fixed parts and 9.50 m under the closed bascule bridges. In 2006, 43,374 cargo ships and 9,625 leisure boats passed through the canal.
The Autobahn 58 crosses under the canal through the Vlaketunnel .
