Wemeldinge ( Weumeldienge in Zeeland ) is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland , on the Oosterschelde and the northern mouth of the canal through Zuid-Beveland . Until 1970 it was an independent parish, since then part of the parish of Kapelle .

In earlier times the economy was mainly geared towards fishing for fish and oyster farming . In the meantime, Wemeldinge is mainly developed for tourism and has numerous accommodations and several campsites as well as a large marina since 1992 . The marina can be reached via three locks (the large, medium and small lock), with the small lock only being used for excursion traffic.

Origin of name

The name Wemeldinge comes from a personal name combined with -inge. The personal name is probably based on the Germanic name Wimald, an abbreviation of Werimbald. In the past, the name was also traced back to Winiwald. Wemeldinge means something like the people (men) of Wimald . Places in Zeeland with names ending in -inge are among the oldest in the province.

badges and flags

Wemeldinge's coat of arms is a gold St. Andrew's cross . The patron saint of the village is Saint Andrew , who was crucified on such an inclined cross. It was confirmed as the municipal coat of arms on July 31, 1817, but was already in use in the 17th century. However, the importance of the coat of arms is not certain.

The village flag consists of three inclined strips in the colors of the coat of arms and was confirmed by the municipal council on November 18, 1955.

geography

Wemeldinge has been part of the Kapelle community since 1970. The village of Kapelle is about 3 kilometers away. Wemeldinge is surrounded by many willows. To the north of the village is the Oosterschelde National Park , the largest national park in the European part of the Netherlands.

Sights, miscellaneous

On a hill in Wemeldinge is the Protestant Maartenskerk with a church tower from the 14th century and a nave from the 15th century ( nave and choir ). East of the church is a twelve meter high mountain ( Vliedberg ). It is the highest mountain in Zeeland. On the other side of the church there is an escape mountain with a height of four meters. Wemeldinge has two historic mills, De Hoop from 1866 and Aeolus from 1869.

Wemeldinge belonged to the Utrecht Ballei of the Order of St. John .
