Success as a racing driver

Even as an amateur, from 1967 to 1973, Cees Priem was successful in numerous smaller races in the Netherlands. In 1970 he won the Eight van Chaam , and in 1971 the Olympia's Tour . In 1972 he took part in the Olympic Games in Munich and was twelfth in the road race.

Even as a professional he achieved many successes in smaller races and stage wins, but the big breakthrough did not materialize. In 1975 he was Dutch road racing champion. In 1980 he won the Coppa Agostoni and in 1983 the three days of De Panne . In 1984 he tried his hand at staying on the track and was third in the national championship. He drove u. a. for the TI-Raleigh team together with Joop Zoetemelk and Dietrich Thurau . He started five times in the Tour de France , was able to win a stage twice ( 1975 , 1980 ), but never finished the tour.

Sports director - doping affair

After the end of his active career as a racing driver, Cees Priem was sports director of the TVM-Farm Frites team from 1987 to 1998 . As part of the doping affair at the 1998 Tour de France , he was arrested by the French judiciary and sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment and a fine of 80,000 Swiss francs as the person primarily responsible for doping at TVM . Various doping substances had been found in the car of the team that tried to escape to Switzerland. In 2014 the two former TVM driver gave Jeroen Blijlevens and Bart Voskamp to, among other things, for Epo to have been responsible ampoules. Both also stated that team leader Priem did not know about it and had been wrongly convicted in France. Priem himself commented on this information with the words: "Better late than never."

Three months before the doping incident in 1998, Priem accidentally hit the racing driver Scott Sunderland from his own team at the Amstel Gold Race with his support vehicle. Sunderland complained that Priem had only superficially apologized to him; the sports director had to pay high damages to the driver.
