Peter Johannes Gertrudis Winnen (born September 5, 1957 in Venray ) is a former Dutch professional cyclist (1980 to 1991) and today's journalist and author.

As an amateur, Winnen took second place in the Peace Drive in 1980, took part in the Olympic Games in Moscow in the same year and took 26th place in the road race . Then he switched to the professional camp.
The mountain specialist won the queen stage of the Tour de France in Alpe d'Huez twice (1981 and 1983) . In 1982 he won the mountain stage to Morzine . When he made his tour debut in 1981, Winnen finished fifth overall and also won the white jersey for the best young professional. Two years later he finished third behind Laurent Fignon and Ángel Arroyo . In 1983 Winnen finished second in the Tour de Suisse . In 1987 he managed to do this just one second behind the winner Andrew Hampsten . In 1988 he finished ninth in the Giro d'Italia as well as in the Tour de France . The red-haired Winnen drove under team boss Walter Godefroot in the Capri-Sonne team and was constantly mistaken for Rudy Pevenage because of his great resemblance .
Journalist and author
In 1991 Winnen retired from professional cycling and studied art history. Together with the two former professional cyclists Maarten Ducrot and Steven Rooks , Winnen confessed to years of doping during his professional career in 1999.
With his autobiography "Van Santander naar Santander", Winnen presented a relentless insight into the world of cycling in 2000. The book was published in spring 2005 under the title “Post aus Alpe d'Huez” by Covadonga Verlag in Bielefeld in German. In 2008 the same publisher published Winnens' collected columns, essays and short stories from his work for various Dutch daily newspapers and magazines under the title "Gute Seele, Badenke".
Winnen writes as a sports columnist for the prestigious NRC Handelsblad and has published other books that have not yet been translated into German.
