Gerben Karstens (born January 14, 1942 in Voorburg ) is a former Dutch cyclist and Olympic champion.

At the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo , Gerben Karstens won the gold medal in the team time trial together with Evert Dolman , Bart Zoet and Jan Pieterse . In the individual road race, he finished 27th.

Even as an amateur, Karstens had drawn attention to himself with minor successes, for example he won the Ronde van Noord-Holland in 1964 and achieved stage victories at the Tour de l'Avenir and the Tour of Belgium . His best individual result at an amateur world championship he had in 1962 with 12th place.

After the Olympic Games, Gerben Karstens became a professional, nicknamed “De Notariszoon uit Leiden”, and was active as a racing driver in various disciplines until 1980. In 1965 he won the Paris – Tours race , in 1966 the Van Chaam eight and was Dutch road racing champion. In 1968 he won the Grand Prix de Fourmies and in 1974 at the Tour du Haut-Var . In 1965 he finished second behind Tom Simpson in the Tour of Lombardy .

He took part ten times in the Tour de France , once in the Giro d'Italia and six times in the Vuelta a España , where he achieved multiple stage victories as an outstanding sprinter. From 1976 to 1978 he drove in the TI Raleigh team under Peter Post together with drivers like Dietrich Thurau and Gerrie Knetemann .

At the 1974 Tour de France , Karstens took second place in the fourth stage, but forgot to take the doping test. He was put back in last place and was given a ten-minute time penalty. The next day the sentence was withdrawn and he was able to take over the yellow jersey from Eddy Merckx .

Karstens started 72 times in six-day races and won 1973 in London and 1975 in Rotterdam with Leo Duyndam . At these races, he was known for entertaining the audience with tricks on the bike such as a handstand. At the 1980 six-day race in Montréal , he said goodbye to active cycling.

Before starting his cycling career, Gerben Karstens was also an excellent speed skater .
