Léon De Lathouwer
Léon De Lathouwer (born September 19, 1929 in Wetteren , † August 7, 2008 in Kalken, Laarne ) was a Belgian cyclist and Olympic champion in cycling .
Athletic career
He was a participant in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London , where he won the gold medal in the team classification of the road race with Lode Wouters and Eugène Van Roosbroeck . He finished fourth in the Olympic road race in Jose Beyaert's victory . Also in 1948 he won the Tour of Belgium for amateurs .
In 1949 he won the Belgian championship in road racing for amateurs .
In 1950 he became independent , winning a stage of the Tour of Belgium for independents (which was held separately at the time). From 1952 to 1959 he was active as a professional driver. He got his first contract with Cyrille Van Hauwaert's cycling team . He has won the Flanders championship several times , as well as a number of smaller road races.
