Valère Van Sweevelt

Valère Van Sweevelt (born April 15, 1947 in Kuringen ( Hasselt )) is a former Belgian  cyclist and national champion in cycling .

Athletic career

Van Sweevelt had won a large number of races as an amateur , so in 1966 alone he was able to book 23 races, including the road race in Schweinfurt (Ernst Sachs Memorial Race ) against the top German drivers. The following year he was able to continue his successful streak and also won the Belgian championship of amateurs before Jean-Pierre Monseré . In 1968 he became a professional driver in the Smiths team , in which Willy Planckaert was the captain. In his first year as a professional he also had the greatest success of his career when he won the classic Liège – Bastogne – Liège race ahead of Walter Godefroot . In 1968 he finished second in the races around the Henninger Tower and the championship in Zurich . He remained active as a professional until 1973 and was able to win several Belgian circuit races.
