The championship of Zurich (meanwhile GP Suisse ), also called Züri Metzgete , was a Swiss one-day race in road cycling . The popular name Züri-Metzgete (for example: Zurich slaughter festival) is an allusion to the harsh conditions that the cyclists initially had to struggle with, as well as the serious mass falls with numerous open wounds.

history

The origins of the championship go back to 1910. The start and finish of the first race over 50 kilometers was in Schwamendingen . The first winner was Paul Suter . The competition was held regularly from 1917 after the RC Westfalen Zürich merged with the Cycling Union Zürich and the Racing Club to form the Cycling Club Zürich (RVZ).

The race first took place in Zurich in early May and then annually in August until 2004 , but due to the redesign of the UCI's racing calendar , it was held in early October since 2005. Until 2004, the race was part of the ten races in the Cycling World Cup . After its end, in 2005 and 2006 it belonged to the newly introduced UCI ProTour , a series of the most important cycling races of the year organized by the UCI until 2010.

In April 2007 it became known that the organizers could not win enough sponsors to cover the budget of 1.2 million Swiss francs, which is why the race did not take place in October 2007. The race has been held as an amateur and popular event since 2008 and is called EKZ Züri Metzgete resp. EKZ Volksmetzgete . On September 5, 2014, the race took place for the last time under the motto “100 years of Züri-Metzgete”.

The record winner is the Swiss Heiri Suter , who won the Metzgete six times between 1919 and 1929.

route

The Zurich championship was held on different routes during the various events. Initially, the Sihlquai was the start and finish area. At the end of the 1950s, the start and finish line moved to Hardturmstrasse at the GC football stadium. The finish line was later in Neu-Affoltern. The routes initially led through the Zurich Oberland with additional laps. Later, a 48 km loop ran in the Zurich Unterland. After 1999, a circuit of 72.5 kilometers and subsequent four laps of 42 kilometers in the Zurich area with a total of 3318 meters of altitude was driven.

After a year of interruption and a new start in 2008 as EKZ Züri Metzgete , the race with start / finish in Buchs / ZH will be held on a 49 km long course in the Zürcher Unterland, with the «Siglistorfer» and the «Regensberger» the two during Contains gradients traveled over decades. The handicap race of the amateurs / elite leads over three laps , the EKZ Volksmetzgete over two laps.
