Gery Verlinden

Gery Verlinden (born May 1, 1954 in Mortsel ) is a former Belgian cyclist .

Career

Gery Verlinden was already successful as an amateur. In 1975 he became Belgian vice-champion in the single pursuit and won the title in the team pursuit (with Karel Andries , Hugo Van Gastel and Willy Spranger ). In 1976 he won the Circuit Franco-Belge and in 1977 the Tour of Limburg .

In 1978 Verlinden turned pro. In the same year he won the Scottish Milk Race . In 1979 he became Belgian road racing champion. In 1980 he won the championship in Zurich . In 1981 he finished third in the overall ranking of the Tour of Belgium and second in the Belgian road championship, behind Roger De Vlaeminck , and fourth in the Tour of Germany . In 1982 he won the Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen .

Gery Verlinden started six times in the Tour de France , in 1980 he finished 22nd, in 1981 he finished 25th.

In 1983 Verlinden was seriously injured in a car accident. In 1987 he ended his cycling career.
