Herman Van Springel (born August 14, 1943 in Ranst ) is a former Belgian cyclist .

Athletic career

Van Springel won his first race as an amateur in 1962, and in 1964 he won the Tour of Belgium for amateurs. He was a professional from 1965 to 1981 . He achieved his greatest success at the Tour de France in 1968, where he finished 2nd, just 38 seconds behind. He wore the yellow jersey for six days and only lost it to Dutchman Jan Janssen on the last stage, an individual time trial . Between 1970 and 1981 Van Springel won the longest classic one-day race in cycling between Bordeaux and Paris seven times .
