Gianbattista Baronchelli

Gianbattista Baronchelli (born September 6, 1953 in Ceresara , Mantua province ) is a former Italian cyclist .

After Baronchelli 1973 Amateur - stage race Giro d'Italia Dilettanti and Tour de l'Avenir won in 1974 he became professional drivers . He celebrated his first victory as a professional driver at the Trofeo Laigueglia. At the end of his career he had 89 successes as a professional.

In his first year as a professional, the mountain specialist was only beaten by Eddy Merckx by twelve seconds at the Giro d'Italia 1974 . He competed in the Giro d'Italia a total of 13 times and finished ten times in the top ten of the overall standings, including at the Giro d'Italia 1978 once again in second place, only 59 seconds behind Johan De Muynck . At the Giro d'Italia 1986 , he won a stage and in the meantime took over the overall leader's Maglia Rosa . He gave up the race after disagreements with his teammates Francesco Moser and Claudio Corti and team leader Gianluigi Stanga . During the season he moved from Supermercati Brianzoli to the Del Tongo team of Moser's rival Giuseppe Saronni , for whom he won the classic Giro di Lombardia for the second time since 1977 at the end of the season. With his second win he was able to pull out of a six-man lead shortly before the finish and thus thwart the sprint victory of the favorite Sean Kelly .

After the end of the 1989 season, Baronchelli ended his career.
