Johan De Muynck (born May 30, 1948 in Sleidinge ) is a former Belgian cyclist .
Athletic career
Johan De Muynck turned professional in 1971 . In 1973 he won the Brabant Arrow and in 1976 the Tour de Romandie . In the same year he had chances to win the Giro d'Italia , which failed because of a conflict with his compatriot Roger De Vlaeminck . He finished second behind the Italian Felice Gimondi , 19 seconds behind. This dispute between the two Flemish professionals was never settled. At the Tour de Suisse 1977 De Muynck finished eighth.
The following year De Muynck won the Giro with 59 seconds ahead of the Italian Gianbattista Baronchelli , without having won a single stage. In 1980 he was fourth in the Tour de France and seventh in the Vuelta a España when Dutch rider Joop Zoetemelk won . In 1981 he finished seventh overall in the Tour . De Muynck justified the fact that he seldom won stages in the big country tours with his defensive driving style, which he himself calls the “ catenaccio of cycling”. He did a total of 13 Grand Tours . In addition, he won several stages on smaller tours. In 1984 he ended his career.
Up to and including 2019, De Muynck was the last Belgian to win a major tour of the country .
Honors
In 2018 Johan De Muynck became the second honorary citizen of his hometown Waarschoot , after the photographer Dirk Braeckman . In 2019, the racing bike with which he won the Giro in 1978 was made for the Koers. Museum van de Wielersport in Roeselare bought.
