Bridge over the Loue

Brères is a French commune with a population of 62 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Brères is located at 260  m , south of Quingey , about 24 kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the western Jura , on the left (eastern) bank of the Loue in a basin between the heights of the Bois du Peu in the west and the Bois du Fay in the east.

The area of ​​the 2.15 km² municipal area covers a section of the western French Jura. The area is limited to the west by the Loue. Here it flows south through a wide basin, which is framed by the outermost mountain ranges of the Jura. The community area extends eastward from the course of the river, with the terrain rising gently. On the eastern edge of the municipality, the highest point of Brères is reached at 298 m.

In Brères lingerie there is a manor house that originally dates back to the 15th century, but was later redesigned several times. The stone bridge over the Loue was built in 1845.

With 62 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Brères is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. Throughout the 20th century, the population always fluctuated between 24 and 48 people.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Brères was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). The Loue's hydropower was previously used to run a mill. Even today, the residents mainly live from their activities in the primary sector . Outside of the primary sector there are almost no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N83 , which leads from Besançon to Lons-le-Saunier . There are other road connections with Mesmay and Chay.
