Verne is a French municipality with 127 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Verne is located at 381 m , five kilometers north of Baume-les-Dames and about 31 kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends on a high plateau between the river valleys of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, on the brook Viotte.
The area of the 7.82 km² municipal area covers a section of the gently undulating landscape north of the Doubs. The main part of the area is occupied by a high plateau, which is an average of 390 m. It consists mainly of arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. The only surface flowing water is the Viotte brook , which has its source at Rillans and seeps away in the Verne area before it reappears as a karst spring at Fourbanne in the Doubstal valley. The plateau is karstified and has several caves and shafts. To the east, the municipality extends to the height of Les Mondrevaux ( 444 m ). In the west the plateau is flanked by the forest ridge of the Bois Verdot ( 445 m ). With a narrow strip, the municipal area extends to the southwest up to the height of the Bois du Raz . At 478 m, Verne's highest point is reached here.
Neighboring municipalities of Verne are Trouvans and Rillans in the north, Vergranne and Autechaux in the east, Luxiol and Fontenotte in the south and Tournans in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Verne belonged to the domain of Clerval , which had been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard since the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The Saint-Martin church was built around 1740 in the classical style on the site of a medieval church. It has a rich interior. Various farmhouses in the traditional Franche-Comté style from the 17th to 19th centuries and a former mill have been preserved in the town center.

With 127 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Verne is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (248 people were counted in 1901), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Verne was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Autechaux to Rognon . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around five kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Luxiol, Vergranne and Rillans.
