geography

View of Pont-les-Moulins

Pont-les-Moulins is located at 281  m , three kilometers southeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 27 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a valley widening of the Cusancin at the mouth of the Sesserant stream , at the southern foot of the Jura ridge (Côte).

The area of the 4.95 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is taken up by the valley of the Cusancin, which is a maximum of one kilometer wide. The river flows here in a winding course to the north and takes up the left side stream Sesserant. The valley is flanked on both sides by steep slopes, which are towered over by limestone walls in various places.

To the east, the area extends to the ridge of the Bois du Saussoi , which forms the westernmost foothills of the Lomont chain . In the south, Pont-les-Moulins has a share of the so-called first Jura plateau, which is an average of 400 m. The highest point in the community is reached here at 426 m. The erosion valley des Audeux , the lowest section of which also belongs to Pont-les-Moulins, is sunk into this plateau . The northern boundary runs along the Roche de Châtard , which, as a distinctive ridge of the Jura ridge, separates the Cusancin valley from that of the Doubs .

Neighboring municipalities of Pont-les-Moulins are Baume-les-Dames in the north, Villers-Saint-Martin and Guillon-les-Bains in the east, Adam-lès-Passavant in the south and Silley-Bléfond in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Pont-les-Moulins belonged to the Kastlanei Baume. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In the 19th century, thanks to the hydropower of the Cusancin, Pont-les-Moulins developed into an industrial site with iron and wood processing and dye works.
