Mairie Éternoz

Éternoz is a French municipality with 338 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Éternoz is located at 508  m above sea level, about 14 kilometers southwest of Ornans and 26 kilometers south of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the French Jura , in a basin of the Ruisseau de la Vau on the western edge of the Amancey plateau , east of the Lison valley cut .

The 29.26 km² large municipal area is crossed from south to north by the winding river of the Lison in a narrow valley that is cut up to 150 m into the surrounding plateaus. The slopes are criss-crossed by distinctive limestone walls in various places. The two side streams, Ruisseau de la Vau and Coulans, which flow from the east, also have deep erosion valleys. To the east of the Lison, the Éternoz plateau extends, which is partly wooded ( Bois des Bornes ) and partly made up of meadows. An approximately 100 m high step leads from this plateau to the high plateau of Amancey and reaches 611 m on Sur la Chaux . The highest point of Éternoz is reached at 670 m on the slope below Montmahoux . A smaller portion of the municipal soil lies west of the Lison and includes the undulating plateau of Alaise and the adjacent wooded areas Bois Monniot , Bois de Séchin and Forêt de Fertans (up to 620 m).

In addition to the actual place, several other villages and hamlets also belong to Éternoz, namely:

  • Doulaize ( 395  m ) in a hollow to the right of the Lison
  • Refranche ( 430  m ) on the Éternoz plateau
  • Coulans-sur-Lison ( 469  m ) in a valley basin on the Éternoz plateau
  • Alaise ( 460  m ) on the plateau west of the Lison

Neighboring municipalities of Éternoz are Lizine and Malans in the north, Amancey and Déservillers in the east, Montmahoux, Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne and Saraz in the south and Myon in the west.

history

The municipality of Éternoz was populated very early. The earliest evidence of human presence was discovered in an abri near Doulaize from the Paleolithic . Further finds from prehistoric times come from several tumuli near Alaise and Refranche, which are dated back to the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt Age .

In the Middle Ages, Éternoz belonged to the lordship of Montmahoux, which was under the sovereignty of the lords of Chalon-Arlay . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1973 when the previously independent municipalities of Alaise, Coulans-sur-Lison, Doulaize and Refranche merged with Éternoz. Since 1993, Éternoz has been a member of the Communauté de communes Amancey-Loue-Lison, which comprises 19 localities .

Attractions

Saint Laurent Church

The Saint-Laurent church in Éternoz was built in the classicism style. Only a few remains of the former mansion are visible. In the old town center, numerous farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved. Coulans-sur-Lison has a Gothic church, while the church of Alaise originally dates back to the 13th century, but was later restored and redesigned several times. The Musée des Métiers ruraux shows a collection on rural life in the 18th and 19th centuries.

With 338 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Éternoz is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century, a slight population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Éternoz was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now a few small and medium-sized businesses, including a company that produces electric motors and a sawmill. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from the D492, which leads from Ornans to Salins-les-Bains . Further road connections exist with Amancey, Malans, Lizine and Myon.
