Saint-Juan is a French municipality with 172 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Saint-Juan is located at 480 m, seven kilometers south of Baume-les-Dames and about 26 kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the so-called first plateau, a wide basin between the Jura border chain (Côte) in the north and the high plateaus in the southeast.
The area of the 12.09 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the wide first Jura plateau, which is an average of 450 m and is slightly undulating. It forms a wide, partially karstified basin and shows a loose structure of farmland, meadowland and forest ( Bois de la Faye ). The north-western boundary runs in the valley of the Audeux , which is deepened into the plateau like a gorge. To the southeast, the community area extends over an approximately 80 m high step to the adjacent heights with the Bois de Bouvassot . Here, at 607 m, the highest point in Saint-Juan is reached.
Neighboring communities of Saint-Juan are Silley-Bléfond and Adam-lès-Passavant in the north, Passavant in the east, Orsans and Aïssey in the south and Bretigney-Notre-Dame in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Saint-Juan belonged to the Passavant rule, which had been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard since the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Saint-Juan was originally built in Romanesque styles and has a valuable organ. Various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 18th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.

With 172 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Juan is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (365 people were still counted in 1881), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Juan was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area or in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Baume-les-Dames to Ornans .
