Mairie Passavent |
Passavant is a French municipality with 217 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Passavant is located at 580 m , nine kilometers south of Baume-les-Dames and about 28 kilometers east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a hill on the western edge of the ridge of Grand Bois, on the edge of a high plateau.
The area of the 14.98 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau, which extends between the valley of the Cusancin and the Grand Bois, averages 520 m and is slightly undulating. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the south, the plateau is bounded by the broad ridge of the Grand Bois, running in a west-east direction, on which Passavant's highest elevation is reached at 697 m. In the extreme south, the community area extends into the Orsans basin.
In addition to the actual location, Passavant also includes various hamlets and individual farms, including:
- Les Bichets ( 510 m ) on the Passavant plateau
- La Combe-Constantin ( 515 m ) on the Passavant plateau
- Les Péquignots ( 520 m ) in a hollow on the plateau below the village
- Buez-Dessus ( 670 m ) at the height of the Grand Bois
- Buez lingerie ( 590 m ) on the southern slope of the Grand Bois
Neighboring municipalities of Passavant are Adam-lès-Passavant and Montivernage in the north, Vaudrivillers in the east, Courtetain-et-Salans and Orsans in the south and Saint-Juan in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Passavant formed its own lordship, which was initially subordinate to the Lords of Montfaucon , but was passed on to the Counts of Montbéliard as a dowry in 1372. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The single-nave Saint-Antide church was built from 1777 to 1780 in the classical style. Before that, the Notre-Dame-de-Ranguevelle chapel, which is located in the open field east of the village, served as the village church. The ruins of the former castle of the Lords of Passavant from the 13th century have been preserved.

With 217 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Passavant is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (406 people were still counted in 1891), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Passavant was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area or in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Baume-les-Dames to Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp . Other road connections exist with Besançon and Sancey-le-Grand .
