geography
Viéthorey is located at 436 m , ten kilometers north-northeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 29 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Montbéliard (beeline). The village extends on the gently undulating limestone plateau between the river valleys of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, south of the heights of Chamois.
The area of the 7.92 km² municipal area covers a section of the undulating landscape between the Doubs and Ognon. The entire area is occupied by the arid high plateau of Viéthorey, which is an average of 430 m. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas, especially the Bois de Reuge in the south. The plateau slopes slightly towards the east. There are only a few rivulets here that seep away into the karstified subsoil after a short distance. At 494 m, the highest point in Viéthorey is reached at the height of the Charmois in the north of the municipality. To the west, the municipality extends to the edge of the Bois des Brosses .
Neighboring municipalities of Viéthorey are Fontenelle-Montby in the north, Gondenans-Montby and Fontaine-lès-Clerval in the east, Voillans in the south and Vergranne and Mésandans in the west.
history
Wall foundations, ramparts and brick finds point to a Gallo-Roman settlement in the municipality of Viéthorey. In the Middle Ages Viéthorey belonged successively to the lords of Montmartin, Clerval and Montby. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Viéthorey is part of the Deux Vallées Vertes municipal association .

With 94 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Viéthorey is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (321 people were counted in 1896), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Viéthorey was mainly characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Voillans to Gondenans-Montby. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away.
