Montferrand-le-Chateau is a French commune with 2,161 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Montferrand-le-Château is located at 280  m , about ten kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends on the western edge of the Jura , on a hill north of the Doubstal below the Schlossberg.

The 7.48 km² municipal area covers a section of the Doubstal. The southern border runs along the Doubs, which flows here through a roughly 500 m wide valley and extends west of the village with the river bend from Thoraise to the north-west. The elongated ridge of the Schlossberg, which descends towards the Doubs with a steep slope crossed by rocks, belongs in geological and tectonic terms to the system of the Jura ridge. At 371 m, this ridge is the highest point in Montferrand-le-Château. The slightly undulating landscape between Haute-Saône and Jura connects to the north of the Schlossberg. In the far north, the community area extends into the extensive Bois Monsieur forest .

In addition to the actual town, various settlements and hamlets belong to Montferrand-le-Château:

  • Le Mont ( 227  m ) in the Doubs valley
  • the station settlement
  • the factory settlement in the Doubstal
  • La Marne ( 240  m ) on the edge of the Bois Monsieur
  • Le Vernois ( 235  m ) on the edge of the Bois Monsieur

Neighboring communities of Montferrand-le-Château are Grandfontaine in the west and north, Avanne-Aveney and Rancenay in the east and Thoraise in the south.

history

Donjon of Montferrand Castle (13th century)

At the beginning of the 13th century, Jean II von Cicon founded the Montferrand Castle on the ridge north of the Doube valley and named himself after the castle from then on. In the following period, Montferrand developed into an important rule that included the right bank of the Doubs between Besançon and the forest area Forêt de Chaux . The rulers also owned land in various places on the southern bank of the river. The family lived in Besançon and was represented by a Kastlan at Montferrand Castle. The castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years War . Together with Franche-Comté , Montferrand finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

There were two nunneries in Montferrand: the Community of the Sisters of Bethany and the Congrégation du Saint-Nom de Jésus et de Marie. In the 18th century, Montferrand was the location of an important glassworks that employed up to 370 workers. To avoid confusion with other municipalities of the same name, Montferrand was officially renamed Montferrand-le-Château in 1922.

Attractions

The square donjon of Montferrand Castle, originally from the 13th century, rises on the hill north of the Doube valley . In addition, ruins of the castle are visible. The Montferrand Chapel was inaugurated in 1956.

With 2161 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montferrand-le-Château is one of the medium-sized communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1167 people were counted in 1881), a marked increase in population has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1950s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has almost quadrupled. Today Montferrand-le-Château belongs to the outer agglomeration belt of Besançon.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Montferrand-le-Château was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and dairy farming). Industry developed early on along the Doubs, including a glassworks. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses. The most important industries today include the automotive industry and civil engineering. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Besançon to Byans-sur-Doubs . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Grandfontaine and Avanne-Aveney. Montferrand-le-Château has a train station on the railway line from Besançon to Mouchard .
