With 2340 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Franois is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 410 and 530 people, a striking population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has more than tripled. Franois is now one of the agglomeration communities of Besançon.

Economy and Infrastructure

The village, which was dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry until well into the 20th century, has developed into an industrial and commercial location since the mid-1970s thanks to the good traffic situation. To date, around 60 companies have settled in the industrial and commercial zones along the main roads, offering around 650 jobs. The important industries include micromechanics, the décolletage and watch industry, tool manufacture (metal construction), the construction and transport industry, a brick factory and wood processing. There are also numerous retail establishments and larger shopping centers. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the other municipalities of the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main D67 road from Besançon to Gray . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around three kilometers away. Other road links exist with Pouilley-les-Vignes and Avanne-Aveney. Franois owns a train station on the Dole – Besançon – Belfort railway line . The route to Bourg-en-Bresse branches off in the Bois de Franois .
