geography
Lavernay is located at an altitude of 215 m above sea level, about 16 kilometers west of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the gently undulating landscape between the rivers of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, in the wide basin of the Ruisseau de Recologne.
The area of the 7.74 km² municipal area includes a section south of the Ognon. The area is slightly undulating and consists mainly of arable and meadow land, there are also some smaller forest areas (including the Bois de la Côte, the Bois de la Chassignole and the Bois des Rappes). From south to north it is crossed by the valley of the Ruisseau de Recologne (also called Ruisseau du Breuil), which is more than a kilometer wide and provides drainage to the Ognon. The valley is flanked on both sides by hills, which usually do not tower above the floodplain by more than 50 meters. At 287 m, the highest point in Lavernay is reached on the hill west of the village. To the east, the community area extends over the plateau to the headwaters of the Ruisseau de Pommeau, a right side stream of the Ruisseau de Recologne.
Neighboring municipalities of Lavernay are Burgille , Franey and Placey in the north, Mazerolles-le-Salin and Villers-Buzon in the east, Corcondray and Corcelles-Ferrières in the south and Lantenne-Vertière in the west.
history
Lavernay's first chapel was built in the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The Saint-Ferréol-et-Ferjeux church was built between 1776 and 1786. The bell tower is preserved from this construction, while the nave was completely renovated in 1865-1874.

With 576 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Lavernay is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (302 people were still counted in 1906), strong population growth has been recorded again, especially since the beginning of the 1980s. Since then the number of inhabitants has doubled.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Lavernay was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now a few local small businesses as well as a micromechanics company and a cheese dairy. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Saint-Vit to Recologne . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 14 kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Lantenne-Vertière, Placey and Corcondray.
