Servin is a French municipality with 202 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Servin is located at 491  m , nine kilometers southeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 34 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a slightly hollow position on the plateau between the valley of the Cusancin and the height of the Bois du Barbot.

The area of the 10.03 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the plateau, which extends between the valley of the Cusancin and the ridge of the Grand Rocher, lies at an average of 500 m and is slightly undulating. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The Servin basin runs out to the north in a dry valley which topographically belongs to the catchment area of the Cusancin. The northern border runs in the narrow, but waterless valley, cut almost 100 m deep into the surrounding plateaus, which creates the natural connection between the basin of Sancey and the Cusancin.

Towards the south, the Servin plateau rises gradually before a 50 m high step leads to the wooded high plateau of the Bois du Barbot. The southern border forms the partly rocky ridge of the Grand Rocher , on which the highest point of Servin is reached at 710 m.

Servin's neighboring municipalities are Cusance and Crosey-le-Petit in the north, Vellevans in the east, Ouvans in the south and Lanans in the west.

history

In Roman times, an important traffic route ran through the Servin area, establishing the connection between Vesontio (Besançon) and the Upper Rhine. In the Middle Ages Servin belonged to the Clerval domain , which came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The Saint-Pierre church was given its current appearance when it was rebuilt in 1818. After the fire in 1984, the bell tower and church had to be extensively restored. The manor house, which originally belonged to the Vernerey family, dates from the 16th century.

With 202 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Servin is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (276 people were counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Servin was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry until well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Besançon to Sancey-le-Grand .
