With 1501 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Novillars is one of the smaller communities in the Doubs department. The village experienced particularly strong population growth at the beginning of the 1970s after the hospital center (psychiatric clinic) was opened. During this time, the population has tripled. After that there was a slow decline. The settlement area of Novillars has grown together with that of Roche-lez-Beaupré.
Economy and Infrastructure
For a long time, Novillars was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Industrialization took place in the 1880s with the construction of the cellulose factory. Since the 1970s, a commercial and industrial zone has developed on the outskirts. Today the paper factory (successor to the former cellulose factory) and the hospital center are the most important employers of Novillars. There are also various retail businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N83, which leads from Besançon to Montbéliard . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around eight kilometers away. Another road connection is with Amagney. Novillars has a train station on the Dole – Besançon – Belfort railway line .
