To the south, a narrow corner of the municipal area extends to the plateau ( 280  m ) that adjoins the Doubstal to the north . To the west, much of the Bois du Chanois forest belongs to Pouilley-les-Vignes.

The hamlet of La Chaille ( 275  m ) on the plateau on the eastern edge of the Bois de Saint-Claude belongs to Pouilley-les-Vignes . Neighboring municipalities of Pouilley-les-Vignes are Chaucenne , Pelousey , Les Auxons and Miserey-Salines in the north, Pirey in the east, Besançon and Serre-les-Sapins in the south and Champvans-les-Moulins and Noironte in the west.

history

The place name probably goes back to the Latin word populus (poplar). On the Mont there was a castle built by Jean de Chalon in the 10th century. In the Middle Ages, Pouilley formed a rulership that was under the suzerainty of the cathedral chapter of Besançon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 1965 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Pouilley-les-Vignes is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 400 and 480 people, a striking population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1960s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has more than tripled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Pouilley-les-Vignes was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Viticulture, which used to be widespread, is now reduced to a few small areas. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses. Since the 1970s, an industrial zone has developed in the valley of the Lanterne northwest of the village. Companies in the tool manufacturing and plastics processing industries have settled here. There are also numerous retail establishments and a supermarket. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the other municipalities of the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Besançon to Audeux . The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is about six kilometers away. Further road connections exist with Pelousey, Miserey-Salines and Franois.
