history

The municipal area of Saint-Vit was crossed by the Roman road that ran from Vesontio (Besançon) to Cabillonum ( Chalon-sur-Saône ). Numerous pieces of jewelry, tools and Roman coins were found in a necropolis from the 6th century. The place name Saint-Vit, which goes back to the Roman martyr Vitus, was first mentioned in a document in the 10th century. Since the Middle Ages, Saint-Vit formed an ecclesiastical rule that was subordinate to the Cathedral Chapter of Besançon. Together with the Franche-Comté , Saint-Vit finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

There were several changes of area or incorporation in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1822 Benusse was incorporated into Saint-Vit; Boismurie followed in 1968 and Antorpe in 1974. The latter changed the department, as an independent municipality it belonged to the Jura department until 1973 . With the merger it came to the Doubs department.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Vit, originally from the 10th century, was largely rebuilt in 1740, only the choir of the previous building from the 13th century has been preserved.
