Chenecey-Buillon is a French municipality with 515 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Chenecey-Buillon is located at 281 m , about twelve kilometers south-southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the valley of the Loue , which extends here in an arc far to the north, at the eastern foot of the heights of the Bois du Faulet .
The area of the 16.58 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the valley of the Loue, which is mostly cut about 80 m deep into the surrounding plateaus and has a flat valley floor about 500 m wide. The steep valley slopes are criss-crossed by limestone walls in some places. North of the village is the Grand Méandre, a large bend in the river that flows around the ridge of the Bois du Faulet . Here, at 498 m, the highest point of Chenecey-Buillon is reached.
To the east, the community area extends to the adjacent plateau, which is an average of 400 m and is predominantly covered by forest ( Grand Bois ), partly also by meadow. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the south the area extends along the Loue up the valley to Buillon.
The municipality consists of different villages and hamlets, namely:
- Chenecey ( 281 m ) on the right bank of the Loue
- La Forge ( 300 m ) on the right bank of the Loue
- Granges-Mathieu ( 360 m ) on the plateau east of the Loue
- Granges-du-Sapin ( 384 m ) on the plateau east of the Loue on the edge of the Grand Bois
- Buillon ( 300 m ) in the Loue valley
Neighboring municipalities of Chenecey-Buillon are Vorges-les-Pins , Busy , Larnod and Pugey in the north, Épeugney and Rurey in the east, Courcelles in the south and Charnay and Cessey in the west.
history
A castle was probably built on the mountain spur above the loop of the Loue as early as the 9th century. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Lords of Coligny and later passed to the Pillot family, a branch of the Coligny family. In the Loue Valley, Archbishop Anséric and the Lords of Chenecey founded the Buillon Monastery in the 12th century , which was run by the Cistercians until the French Revolution . The original village called Charency-sur-Loue was on a hill near what is now the hamlet of Granges-Mathieu. In the 17th century, Chenecey became the most important town in today's municipality. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1822, Chenecey and Buillon merged to form the dual parish of Chenecey-Buillon. From the 17th to the 19th century, Chenecey gained regional importance as a location for ironworks, which offered numerous jobs. The population of the place rose to over 1000 in the middle of the 19th century.
Attractions
The village church of Sainte-Croix-du-Christ near the banks of the Loue is originally from the 14th century (late Romanesque). Various alterations were made over the years, including the addition of side chapels (15th and 16th centuries) and the redesign of the nave in the 18th century. Only a few remains of the former medieval castle have survived. Ruins of the Buillon monastery have also been preserved. There is a renaissance castle nearby .

With 515 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Chenecey-Buillon is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had declined markedly in the first half of the 20th century (813 people were still counted in 1881), a significant increase in population has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Chenecey-Buillon used to be a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In the 19th century, the ironworks shaped village life, but they were closed after the Second World War. Today there are some local small businesses, including a sawmill. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N83 (Besançon - Lons-le-Saunier). Other road connections exist with Épeugney and Courcelles.
