Lanans is a French municipality with 167 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Lanans is located at 511 m , nine kilometers southeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 33 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on the plateau between the valley of the Cusancin and the ridge of the Grand Bois.
The area of the 10.05 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau, which extends between the valley of the Cusancin and the ridge of the Grand Bois, is on average 500 m and is slightly undulating. It consists mainly of arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. A dry valley begins near the village , which topographically belongs to the catchment area of the Cusancin. Towards the south, the terrain rises gradually and extends to the terrace of the Bois Brûlé ( 600 m ). The southern border runs on the wooded ridge that stretches from the Grand Bois east to the Grand Rocher . The highest point of Lanans is reached here at 680 m.
Neighboring municipalities of Lanans are Montivernage and Cusance in the north, Servin in the east, Ouvans and Courtetain-et-Salans in the south and Vaudrivillers in the west.
history
In Roman times an important traffic route ran through the area of Lanans, which established the connection between Vesontio (Besançon) and the Upper Rhine. In the Middle Ages Lanans was part of the Clerval domain , which came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 167 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Lanans is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (101 people were still counted in 1906), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Lanans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry until well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now a few local small businesses, including a transport company. Many workers are also commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Besançon to Sancey-le-Grand . Further road connections exist with Ouvans, Cusance and Montivernage.
