former royal saltworks

Arc-et-Senans is a French commune with 1624 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . It belongs to the arrondissement Besançon and the community association Loue-Lison .

history

The place arose with a Royal Saltworks built in 1775/76 according to plans by the architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux , which was in operation until 1895. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982 . The location chosen was a field between the former villages of Arc and Senans, which was strategically located in the immediate vicinity of the extensive royal forests of Chaux . It was connected to the Mediterranean, the North Sea and the port of Antwerp via the Rhine-Rhône Canal . The connection to the Salins-les-Bains fountain, 21 kilometers away, has a natural gradient. This made it possible to set up an underground pipe system to transport the salt water that was evaporated in the salt works to produce salt.

From September 1941 to September 1943 there was a concentration camp run by the German occupying power in the salt works for non-residents, called "nomades", mostly gypsies . Today a plaque at the entrance commemorates these people, for whom Arc-et-Senans was often a stopover on the way to murder.
