Mario Czaja (born September 21, 1975 in Berlin ( East )) is a German politician ( CDU ). He is a member of the Berlin House of Representatives and chairman of the Wuhletal CDU district association (corresponds to the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district ). Czaja was Senator for Health and Social Affairs in Senate Wowereit and Senate Müller I from December 1, 2011 to December 8, 2016 .

Since November 2018 he has been President of the German Red Cross Berlin.

Life

education and profession

The son of an electrician and a nurse grew up in Berlin-Mahlsdorf and lives in Marzahn-Hellersdorf. After he had finished high school in 1995 with the middle school leaving certificate, he completed an apprenticeship as an insurance salesman in 1997 . After training and community service, Czaja began his professional life as Head of Marketing and Sales at the Krone management und technologie GmbH group . Political career

Czaja has been involved in Berlin politics since 1993. From 1995 to 1999 he was a member of the district assembly of Berlin-Hellersdorf . He advocated closer cooperation with the PDS , which resulted in a party expulsion procedure that was discontinued in 1999.

In the election in October 1999 in the constituency of Kaulsdorf-Mahlsdorf, Czaja was directly elected to the Berlin House of Representatives, to which he has been a member without interruption. In the preferred choice in October 2001 won Gregor Gysi ( PDS ), the direct mandate against him; Czaja was elected to the Berlin House of Representatives from his party's district list. In the election in September 2006 , Czaja won his constituency well ahead of his SPD and PDS opposing candidates. Czaja was the only CDU candidate in East Berlin who succeeded. He received 33.8 percent of the first votes and 13.1 percent of the second votes for the CDU in Marzahn-Hellersdorf. The Berliner Zeitung then described him as the “election winner” of the Berlin CDU. Until the end of November 2011, Czaja was a member of the committees for health, the environment and consumer protection as well as urban development.

As the previous government partners SPD and CDU lost their majority in the House of Representatives as a result of the election result and a red-red-green coalition was formed, Czaja resigned from the state government on December 8, 2016 when the second Senate Müller took office . Successors were Elke Breitenbach ( Die Linke ) in the Office for Integration, Labor and Social Affairs and Dilek Kolat ( SPD ) in the Office for Health, Care and Equality.

Mario Czaja is a member of the friends' association of the Kaulsdorfer Ulmenschule, sponsor of the Wilhelminian style museum in the Mahlsdorf manor , member of the Friends of Gardens of the World Association and patron of the non-profit Librileo project. 2015 refugee crisis

In the summer of 2015, Czaja came under fire when the State Office for Health and Social Affairs Berlin (LaGeSo), which he oversees, could no longer control the increasing influx of refugees and talk of a humanitarian crisis. The senator, who is considered a good communicator but hesitant and not very assertive, was made head of a daily meeting of a crisis team on August 11, 2015, which is supposed to organize faster admission procedures, more accommodation and employees for refugee work. Education controversy

In February 2006, a report by Spiegel Online announced that Czaja had obtained his degree as a " Diplom-Ökonom " ( diploma economist ), which he had stated on his website and in the House of Representatives' manual, at the so-called Free University of Teufen / Appenzell Ausserrhoden - allegedly through a postgraduate degree Studies from 2002 to 2005 - acquired.
