geography

Cubry is located at an altitude of 320  m above sea level, seven kilometers south of Villersexel and about 29 kilometers west of the city of Montbéliard (as the crow flies). The village extends in the hilly landscape between the valley lowlands of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, in the headwaters of the Ruisseau de l'Étang at the north foot of the heights of the Roches de Nans .

The area of the 5.40 km² large municipality covers a section of the hilly landscape south of the Ognon valley. The central part of the area is occupied by the Cubry basin, in which the Ruisseau de l'Étang rises. It drains the area west to the Ognon. This valley basin is limited in the south by the heights of Bournel and the wooded ledge of the Roches de Nans , on which the highest point of Cubry is reached at 453 m, and in the east by a plateau ( 340  m ), which the valleys of Ruisseau de l'Étang and Bief d'Auta separate. To the north, the municipality extends into the broad valley of the Ognon in the area of the Bois derrière la Côte .

Neighboring communities of Cubry are Pont-sur-l'Ognon and Les Magny in the north, Abbenans in the east, Uzelle and Nans in the south and Cubrial in the west.

history

Cubry: Castle / Château de Bournel

Since the Middle Ages, Cubry formed a fiefdom of the Rougemont lordship. The area belonged to the Moustier family, originally from Mouthier-Hautepierre. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Cubry is a member of the Deux Vallées Vertes community association .

Attractions

The village church of Cubry dates from the 19th century. The Château de Bournel rises on a plateau south of the village . It consists of the Vieux Château , which was built from 1730 in the late Gothic- romantic style (remodeled in 1890 and 1910) and the adjacent modern castle in the neo-Gothic style from around 1860 to 1870. The castles are surrounded by a large park in the English style.

With 88 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Cubry is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (313 people were still counted in 1911), the population grew during the 1970s, but fell again from the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Cubry was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. The old Château de Bournel now houses a hotel with a restaurant and golf course.

The place is away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the main road D50, which leads from Baume-les-Dames to Villersexel . Further road connections exist with Cubrial, Nans and Uzelle.
