Mairie Chay

Chay [ ʃei ] is a French municipality with 213 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chay is located at 255  m , south of Quingey , about 26 kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the western Jura , on the left (eastern) bank of the Loue in a basin between the heights of the Trémont in the west and the Fourrée in the east.

The area of the 6.54 km² large municipality covers a section of the western French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Loue basin, which is approximately 2 km wide. The Loue flows here to the south through a basin, which is framed by the outermost mountain ranges of the Jura. The basin is flanked in the west by the steeply rising and densely wooded ridge of the Trémont (up to 450 m). To the south-east, the community area extends over an initially gentle, later relatively steep slope of the Fourrée to the edge of the height of By. This ridge belongs to a Jura chain that stretches north from Mont Poupet to the bend of the Loue river. The highest point of Chay is reached here at 502 m.

Neighboring municipalities of Chay are Mesmay and Brères in the north, Paroy and By in the east, Rennes-sur-Loue in the south and Buffard in the west.

history

The rule of Chay was founded in the 10th century and belonged to the powerful noble family de Chay. The Lords of Chay were under the sovereignty of the House of Chalon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The castle fell into disrepair at the end of the 17th century and was no longer rebuilt.

Attractions

As early as the 14th century there was a mill on the Loue, which has been changed several times over the centuries and is now out of order. The current stone bridge over the Loue was built in 1854. Various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.

With 213 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Chay is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (240 people were counted in 1886), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chay was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main road N83 which leads from Besançon to Lons-le-Saunier . Further road connections exist with Brères, Paroy and Rennes-sur-Loue.
