Château de Moncley

Moncley is a French municipality with 280 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Moncley is located at 225  m , about 13 kilometers northwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends on a terrace on the southern edge of the Ognon Valley, on the edge of the gently undulating landscape between the rivers of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north.

The area of the 7.92 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Ognon Valley. The northern border runs along the Ognon, which flows here with several turns through an approximately two-kilometer-wide, flat valley low, receiving various short side streams. From the course of the river, the community area extends south into the adjacent slightly undulating landscape and into the valley basin of the Lanterne , a left tributary of the Ognon. The entire south-eastern part of the municipality is occupied by the Bois du Grand Bugnoz , an extensive forest area. Here, at 255 m, Moncley's highest point is reached.

Neighboring municipalities of Moncley are Pin , Vregille and Sauvagney in the north, Les Auxons in the east, Pelousey and Chaucenne in the south and Émagny in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Moncley was the center of a rule from the 13th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

Sainte-Madeleine church

The village church of Sainte-Madeleine in Moncley was rebuilt in 1771, with a side chapel of the previous building (16th century) being integrated. The most important building is the castle on the western outskirts, which was built in 1778 for the Marquis François Terrier de Santans in the style of French neoclassicism . Its facade shows a semicircle that opens to a park towards the Ognon Valley. The castle was built on the site of the medieval castle.

With 280 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Moncley is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (297 people were still counted in 1886), there has been significant population growth again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Moncley was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Émagny to Devecey. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around eleven kilometers away. Other road connections exist with Chaucenne and Sauvagney.
