Bridge over the Loue at Chouzelot

Chouzelot is a French municipality with 269 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chouzelot is located at 267  m , near Quingey , about 18 kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the western Jura , on the right (north) bank of the Loue in a valley widening at the south foot of the height of the Gros Bois .

The area of the 6.41 km² large municipality covers a section of the western French Jura. The area is limited to the east and south by the Loue, which flows here in a winding course through an approximately one kilometer wide valley to the southwest. Above Chouzelot, the valley widens into a basin, which is framed by the outermost mountain ranges of the Jura. From the course of the river, the community area extends westward over the floodplain and a steep slope to the wooded ridge of the Gros Bois , which separates the parallel valleys of the Loue and Doubs . At 500 m, it is the highest point in Chouzelot.

Neighboring communities of Chouzelot are Vorges-les-Pins in the north, Cessey in the east and Quingey in the south and west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Chouzelot belonged to the Quingey rule. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (281 people were still counted in 1881), the population has continued to grow steadily since the beginning of the 1970s. Today the settlement area of Chouzelot has grown together with that of Quingey .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chouzelot was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now some local small businesses, especially in retail. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the old main road N83 , which leads from Besançon to Lons-le-Saunier . Since 1999, with the completion of the Quingey bypass, the town center has been relieved of through traffic. Another road connection is with Saint-Vit .
