Chalezeule is a French commune with 1,292 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

Chalezeule is located at 250  m , about five kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Doubstal on the right side of the river, on the northwestern edge of the Jura , in the area of ​​the Jura border chain (Côte).

The area of ​​the 3.94 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Doubstal. The Doubs flows with several bends through a flat valley lowlands that is no more than 2 kilometers wide. South of the village it enters the valley between the heights of Mont de Brégille (in the west) and Montfaucon (in the east). The eastern municipal boundary always runs along the Doubs. From the course of the river, the community area extends westward over the flat floodplain and the adjacent steep slope to the northern foothills of Mont de Brégille. The highest point of Chalezeule is reached here at 400 m.

Chalezeule includes the Les Clairs Soleils settlement ( 350  m ) on the northeastern roof of Mont de Brégille on the edge of Besançon. Neighboring communities of Chalezeule are Thise in the north, Chalèze in the east, Montfaucon in the south and Besançon in the west.

Chalezeule: Historic lime kilns

In the 12th century Chalezeule is mentioned under the name Calisiola . During the Middle Ages the village belonged to the domain of Montfaucon. Together with Franche-Comté , it finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The village church of Chalezeule was built in the 17th century. The Château de la Juive is a former mansion in a park and now serves as a restaurant.

With 1292 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Chalezeule is one of the smaller municipalities in the Doubs department. During the 20th century, the village experienced continuous population growth thanks to its proximity to Besançon. The number of inhabitants has doubled since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until the 20th century, Chalezeule was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). There was a brick factory in the 19th century. Since the 1950s, a commercial and industrial zone has developed northwest of the village on the main road on the outskirts of Besançon, which is divided into the municipalities of Chalezeule, Besançon and Thise with its approximately 100 hectares. Numerous companies in the electronics, cardboard, automotive, advertising and transport industries have settled on Chalezeule. There is also a large shopping center and various retail establishments. Chalezeule therefore has more jobs than residents; however, many workers work abroad in Besançon and the surrounding area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main road N83 that runs from Besançon to Montbéliard . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away. Another road connection is with Thise.
