Voires is a French commune with a population of 92 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Voires is located at 619  m above sea level, eight kilometers east of Ornans and about 22 kilometers southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , to the west of the Valdahon plateau on the edge of the Bois de la Bouhard, north of the Loue valley .

The area of the 4.88 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is occupied by the high plateau of Valdahon, which is an average of 620 m. It consists partly of arable and meadow land, partly of forest and gradually rises towards the east. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. In the east, the municipality extends into the extensive wooded area of the Bois de Bouhard , in which the highest point of Voires is reached at 709 m.

Neighboring municipalities of Voires are Guyans-Durnes in the north, Vernierfontaine in the east, Lavans-Vuillafans in the south and Durnes in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Voires belonged to the dominions of Durnes and Châteauneuf (with Vuillafans). Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Voires is a member of the Portes du Haut-Doubs municipality .

With 92 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Voires is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (146 people were still counted in 1886), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Voires was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector there are almost no jobs in the village. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Valdahon to Vuillafans . Another road connection exists with Durnes.
