Fontenotte is a French commune with a population of 62 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Fontenotte is located at 365 m , four kilometers northwest of Baume-les-Dames and about 27 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon , in a valley between the heights of Bois du Raz and Framont.
The area of the 5.65 km² large municipal area includes a section in the extreme northwestern mountain ranges of the Jura . The central part of the area is occupied by a depression that is on average 360 m. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. The valley is flanked on its southeast side by the heights of the Framont , in the northwest by the ridge of the Bois du Raz , on which the highest elevation of Fontenotte is reached at 478 m. To the west, the municipality extends over the densely wooded basin of the Bois de Cambolard ( 350 m ) to the adjacent height of the Bois du Grand Val ( 420 m ). There are no above-ground rivers in the entire area because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.
The neighboring municipalities of Fontenotte are Tournans and Verne in the north, Luxiol in the east, Baume-les-Dames in the south and La Bretenière in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Fontenotte was part of the domain of Clerval , which had been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard since the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Fontenotte is part of the Doubs Baumois municipal association .
Attractions
The place is characterized by various characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries, some of which have been renovated today and serve as second homes.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (97 people were still counted in 1886), a slight population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Fontenotte was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Luxiol to La Bretenière. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around seven kilometers away. Another road connection is with Baume-les-Dames.
