Roche-lez-Beaupré is a French commune with 2,111 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

Roche-lez-Beaupré is located at 259  m , about eight kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Doubstal on the right, northern side of the river, on the northwestern edge of the Jura , at the northern foot of the Côte.

The area of ​​the 5.63 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Doubstal. The southern border runs along the Doubs, which flows here with several bends through an approximately one kilometer wide, flat valley depression to the west and is accompanied by the Rhine-Rhône Canal . From the course of the river, the community area extends northward over the wide floodplain and a 50 to 80 m high step to the adjacent plateau. This lies on average at 320 m, is divided by two short erosion valleys and is covered by an extensive forest ( Bois de Roche ). At 339 m, the highest point of Roche-lez-Beaupré is reached here. In the far north the parish soil extends to the foot of the Sassy ridge.

Coin finds indicate that the municipality was probably already settled by the Sequani . Was first mentioned in documents Roche in 1249. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the archbishop of Besancon and was under the reign of Beaupré, the place which is why even then Roche-Lez-Beaupré called ( lez has the meaning of near ). Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. From 1790 to 1801 Roche temporarily had the rank of canton capital, which it subsequently lost to Marchaux . The municipality was officially renamed Roche-lez-Beaupré by decree in 1934.

The village church of Roche-lez-Beaupré was built in 1717 on the site of a previous church and was later restored several times (the last time in 1971). During the 20th century, the village experienced continuous population growth thanks to its proximity to Besançon. The number of inhabitants has doubled since the early 1960s. The settlement area of ​​Roche-lez-Beaupré has now merged with that of Novillars.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Roche-lez-Beaupré was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Since the 1950s, a commercial and industrial zone has developed on the western edge of the village and along the national road. Today in Roche-lez-Beaupré there are numerous companies in the refinery, metal processing, chemical industry (production of nitrogen fertilizers) and precision engineering. There are also several trading and logistics companies as well as various retail businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.
