Malbrans is a French municipality with 160 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Malbrans is located at 548  m above sea level, five kilometers west of Ornans and about 14 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , on a high plateau that connects to the north of the deeply carved erosion valley of the Loue .

The area of the 8.74 km² municipal area covers a section of the stratified landscape of the western French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the Malbrans plateau, which averages 540 m. It consists partly of arable and meadow land, partly of forest and shows only relatively small differences in relief. The entire plateau has no surface watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The landscape is characterized by various karst phenomena , for example the Grotte de la Colombière and the Gouffre de Vauvourgier . The southern boundary runs above a rock layer formed from resistant limestone, which slopes steeply to the Loue valley. At 624 m, the highest point in Malbrans is reached on the Rocher de Punay in the north of the high plateau. To the east, the municipal area extends into the Bois de Narpent and into the Combe de Punay valley , which is drained to the Loue.

Neighboring municipalities of Malbrans are Villers-sous-Montrond in the north, Tarcenay-Foucherans in the east, Scey-Maisières in the south and Montrond-le-Château in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Malbrans was part of the Montrond dominion. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Malbrans is a member of the Loue-Lison community association .

Attractions

The village church of Malbrans was built in the 18th century. Various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.

With 160 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Malbrans is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (228 people were still counted in 1881), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Malbrans was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The brick factory in the Combes de Punay was founded in 1839. After the company closed in 1928, it was converted into a sawmill. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main D67 road from Besançon to Ornans. There are other road connections with Scey-en-Varais, Montrond-le-Château and Villers-sous-Montrond.
