Entrance

Adam-lès-Passavant is French municipality with 89 inhabitants (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Adam-lès-Passavant is 450 m, six kilometers south of Baume-les-Dames and about 26 km east of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in an outflow-free basin on the so-called first plateau, a basin between the Jura rim chain (Côte) in the north and the high plateaus in the southeast.

The area of the 9.59 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the wide first Jura plateau, which is on average 460 m and is slightly undulating. It forms a wide, partially karstified basin and shows a loose structure of farmland, meadowland and forest. The north-western border runs above the steep drop to the ravine-like valley of the Audeux . Towards the north, the plateau slopes down to the valley of the Cusancin, with the municipality floor reaching almost down to the river at one point. To the east, the community area extends over a stepped terrain to the adjacent heights with the wooded Mont d'Adam , on which the highest elevation of Adam-lès-Passavant is reached at 561 m.

Neighboring municipalities to Adam-lès-Passavant are Pont-les-Moulins and Guillon-les-Bains in the north, Passavant in the east, Saint-Juan in the south and Silley-Bléfond in the west.

history

Various stray finds indicate that the municipality of Adam-lès-Passavant was already settled in prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Passavant rule, which had been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard since the 14th century . Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 89 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Adam-lès-Passavant is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (209 people were counted in 1886), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Adam-lès-Passavant was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) well into the 20th century. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector there are almost no jobs in the village. Many workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Baume-les-Dames to Ornans . Another road connection exists with Passavant.
