Torpes Castle

Torpes is a French commune with 1,021 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Torpes is located at 260  m , about twelve kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends on the western edge of the Jura , on a terrace above a bend in the Doubs , opposite Thoraise.

The area of ​​the 5.55 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Doubstal. The eastern border runs along the Doubs, which flows here with several bends through a wide valley low to the south. From the course of the river, the community area extends westward over the flat floodplain and the adjacent steep step, which is usually 20 to 40 m high and is partially marked by rocks, to the terrace of Torpes. This is followed in the west by a gently undulating landscape with wooded areas ( Bois du Gîte ) and arable or meadow land. In the very south, the community soil extends to a foothill at the height of the Grand Bois , on which the highest elevation of Torpes is reached at 350 m.

history

In the Middle Ages Torpes formed its own lordship, which came into the possession of the Thoraise lordship in 1333. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Until his death under the guillotine in 1793, Torpes was owned by Louis Marie Florent de Lomont d'Haraucourt, duc du Châtelet .

The village church of Saint-Michel was built in the 18th century in the classical style. Torpes Castle on the edge of the plateau, which originally dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, but burned down in 1492, was rebuilt from 1735 on the ruins of the medieval building. With 1,021 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Torpes is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century had always been in the range between 390 and 470 people, there has been a significant increase in population since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Torpes was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and dairy farming) and forestry. In addition, there are various small and medium-sized businesses today. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Grandfontaine to Osselle. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away. There are other road connections with Routelle and Boussières. Torpes has a train station on the railway line from Besançon to Mouchard .
