Esnans is a French commune with a population of 68 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Esnans is 300  m , three kilometers west-southwest of Baume-les-Dames and about 25 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Doubstal on a slightly elevated position on the left southern side of the river, in the extreme northwestern ridges of the Jura , at the northern foot of Mont Dommage .

The area of the 3.72 km² municipal area includes a section of the Doubstal. The Doubs flows here with several turns through a mostly 500 m wide flat floodplain to the west-south-west and at the same time forms the waterway of the Rhine-Rhône Canal . The valley is deeply cut between the ridges of the Jura ridge. From the course of the river, which forms the northern border of the municipal area, the municipal area extends southwards over the valley floodplain, the terrain terrace of Esnans and a steep wooded slope up to the crest of the Jura ridge, which forms an anticline in geological and tectonic terms . It is subdivided into the heights of Mont Dommage ( 570  m ) and the Bois de la Côte , where the highest point of Esnans is reached at 588 m. The steep slope facing the Doubs is criss-crossed by limestone walls in various places.

Esnans neighbors are Baume-les-Dames in the north and east, Silley-Bléfond and Bretigney-Notre-Dame in the south and Ougney-Douvot and Fourbanne in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages Esnans belonged to the domain of Passavant , which came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1809 the formerly independent municipality of Grange-Willotey was merged with Esnans. Esnans Keute is part of the Doubs Baumois municipal association .

Attractions

A tower and a chapel have been preserved from the former 16th century mansion that burned down during the First World War.

With 68 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Esnans is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (133 people were still counted in 1896), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Up until well into the 20th century, Esnans was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Baume-les-Dames to Ougney-Douvot. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around nine kilometers away.
